In a world where clients often find their therapist, counsellors and coaches online before ever meeting them, your brand is more than just a logo. It’s your voice, your values, and the way you make people feel.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refresh your presence, here are some questions to get you thinking, along with some practical tips to help you stand out while staying true to who you are.

And remember: you don’t need to get it perfect the first time. It’s okay to evolve, experiment, and refine as you go. The important thing is to start.

Start with What You Truly Need

Before building or refreshing your brand and marketing, think about what you actually need. As a practitioner in private practice, your time is precious. You don’t need to do it all, focus on what works best for you, your energy and focus.

  • Websites are great, but not essential. If you’re not ready, don’t force it.
  • Social media can be powerful, but only if you enjoy and commit to it.
  • Newsletters encourage continued engagement, but need a lot of content.

Ask Yourself

Make sure you ask yourself some important questions, and be honest with yourself, what do you want and enjoy?

  • Do I enjoy writing long-form content? If yes, consider starting a blog.
  • Do I like sharing behind-the-scenes moments and visuals? Maybe Instagram is your space.
  • Do I want to automate bookings? Look into calendar integrations or platforms that do this for you.
  • Do you have a service that can be sold online? Maybe you have enough content to write a book? Then it might be time to plan this out, as semi-passive income can be a game changer.

Whatever content you are preparing, whatever plans you decide, here are a few practical tips to consider:

Getting Practical

Pick and niche and get clear on it – this means writing it all down, the power of pen (or keyboard) to paper has been proven, it allows you to clear the cobwebs and find the way forward.

Who you help – adults, couples, women, neurodivergent teens, know your auidence

How you help – what is your approach, how does it differ from others, what tone do you want your content to convey, how do you want your voice to sound – warm and nurturing, calm and professional, perhaps direct with a sense of humour.

Know your why – we all have one, or two, and it is good to have your why and story to hand, it makes a great bio/about me page.

Be memorable – be open, clear and true to you, the more memorable and relatable your brand, the more you’ll be remembered.

Create a visual brand – This sounds complicated, but truly it can be simple, base it on consistency, a great brand visual can reflect the tone of your practice. Pick calming earth tones or warm neutrals, use soft and clean fonts.

Best use of a website – If you have one, this is your shop window, make sure that you are clear on how you can help, who you help, have photos of you, and an easy way for people to get in touch or book. If you aren’t comfortable updating it regularly, make sure the content is lasting.

Be consistent – You don’t need to post everyday on social media, or write weekly newsletters, or post blog content all the time. However, consistency is important.

Let others speak for you – if you can, I know in some counselling and therapy settings this is harder, ask for client testimonials and feedback. It shows potential clients what it’s like to work with you and build credibility.
